How to Prepare Your Home for a Roof Replacement

roof replacement

Making the decision to move forward with roof replacement isn’t always easy, but sometimes it becomes a necessity. Most roofing is designed to last 30 years, and if you’re getting close to that 30-year mark, it’s time to update.

The first step is finding the right roof replacement company that provides the residential roofing services you need. The second step is to schedule your appointment. Finally, the third step is preparing your home for the big day.

What exactly should you do before your contractors come to replace your roof? Preparation for roof replacement isn’t difficult, but it is crucial.

Read on for a complete checklist to prepare your home for roof replacement.

Preparing Indoor Areas for Roof Replacement

First, let’s take a look at what you will need to do inside your home to prepare for roof replacement. The objective here is to protect your belongings from dust, debris, and damage.

Remove or Cover Furniture and Valuables Below the Roof

Whether you have an unfinished attic or a finished floor just below your roof, it’s important to prepare this area. We suggest that you remove any valuables, especially if they are fragile. In addition, we ask that you cover any furniture to keep it clean and clear of any dust or debris.

Covering your furniture doesn’t just protect the furniture, itself. It also protects your indoor air quality. Coverings can be thrown away or washed to rid your home of dust or debris, whereas furniture tends to trap these pollutants and release them back into the air slowly over time.

Remove Fragile Items from Walls

The vibrations from hammers and other tools can travel to the floors below your roof. This is especially the case in older homes with wooden structures. To be on the safe side, we advise that you remove fragile items (like picture frames with glass panes) from the walls, particularly on the level immediately below your roof.

Preparing Outdoor Areas for Roof Replacement

Now, let’s talk about what you can do to prepare your yard before roof replacement. These steps will make it safer for everyone and easier to clean up after the roof replacement is complete.

In addition to these steps, it can be ideal for all vehicles to be moved from the main driveway. Not only does this give your contractors a place to park with easy access to tools and materials but it also ensures that your own vehicles will be safe in the event that anything falls from the roof.

Mow the Lawn and Trim Trees as Needed

If any tree branches are growing out over your roof in a manner that could obstruct work, have them trimmed back before your roof replacement. In addition, it is a good idea to mow your lawn the day before work begins. This makes it easier to clean up after the work is finished and to locate any fallen nails or other potentially dangerous objects.

Move Outdoor Furniture and Lawn Decorations

In order to create more clearance and protect your belongings, we advise that you move any outdoor furniture or lawn decorations from the area of your yard that is closest to the house. Relevant lawn decorations include potted plants, lighting fixtures, statues, and other items. You should also relocate any outdoor equipment or toys like bicycles, wheelbarrows, basketball hoops, and more.

Keep Pets and Children Out of the Yard During Roof Replacement

While your roof replacement is underway, it’s important that you keep your pets and children out of the yard. We practice the utmost care while providing roofing services, but it is always best to exercise caution during a construction project.

Checking Relevant Utilities Before Roof Replacement

Finally, let’s take a look at two steps you may need to take. If you don’t have an automated sprinkler system or a satellite dish, you can skip these steps.

Turn Off Your Sprinklers

If you have an automated sprinkler system, make sure that it is not going to go off during your roof replacement. You don’t want your brand new roofing materials to become wet before they are installed. Your contractors will also appreciate your consideration in avoiding giving them an unexpected shower!

Prepare Satellite Reinstallment If Necessary

If you use a satellite dish or any roof-bound antennae for your cable or internet connection, these will need to be removed during construction. We can typically handle removal, but you will need to contact your satellite provider to have the equipment reinstalled.

If possible, we do recommend that you reinstall this equipment on a pole near your home, rather than back on the roof. Satellite dishes and other antennae can cause roof leakages and other issues that may lead to roof damage down the road.

Find the Best Roof Replacement Service Near You

Staying on top of roof replacement is a great way to protect your interior and maintain a high property value. By following our checklist, you can make sure that both your home’s interior and your yard is ready for roof replacement! Remember, cover and protect your indoor items and clear your yard to make sure that everything goes smoothly on roof replacement day.

One Last Step to Finish

“I work with a lot of contractors as a real estate broker. There are a few that stand out. It is very hard to find a company that does great work at a fair price – and – has outstanding communication and customer service. Brett and Innovative Roofing is one of those rare breeds. They have earned a reputation as being one of the best in the business as it has been earned through great work. I received a reply from them on a Saturday and that put them over the top in customer service – such a rarity.”
